Stephen L. Johnson serves as Vice Chair and Chief Strategy Officer of American Airlines Group Inc., where he leads the company's strategic planning, corporate development, and long-term growth initiatives. With more than 40 years of dedicated service to American Airlines, Johnson has been a cornerstone in the airline's evolution from a domestic carrier to the world's largest airline by passengers carried. His tenure has spanned critical periods, including financial recoveries, mergers, and industry disruptions, positioning him as a key architect of the company's resilience and expansion. Johnson began his career at American Airlines in 1983 as a financial analyst in the Cargo Division, quickly rising through roles in sales, finance, and operations. He served as Senior Vice President of Planning and Performance before becoming Chief Financial Officer in 2005, where he steered the company through Chapter 11 bankruptcy restructuring and post-9/11 challenges. From 2010 to 2011, he acted as President, and following the 2013 merger with US Airways, he took on executive leadership in strategy and integration, overseeing the seamless combination of networks, fleets, and teams that solidified American's global dominance. Among his notable achievements, Johnson has driven fleet modernization efforts, including orders for hundreds of fuel-efficient aircraft, and spearheaded digital transformation and sustainability strategies.
