Tonya L. Berry is Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for CMS Energy Corporation and its principal subsidiary, Consumers Energy, a role she assumed in 2021. In this capacity, she directs the comprehensive operations of the company’s electric and natural gas utilities, overseeing distribution, transmission, generation, customer service, and field operations that serve more than 6.8 million electric and gas customers across Michigan. Berry’s leadership emphasizes operational excellence, safety, reliability, and the integration of innovative technologies to support the state’s clean energy transition. Berry joined Consumers Energy in 1998, advancing through a series of progressively responsible roles that honed her expertise in utility operations and customer experience. Her career highlights include serving as Vice President of Gas Operations, where she improved infrastructure reliability and safety protocols; Vice President of Customer Experience, enhancing service delivery and satisfaction metrics; and Senior Vice President of Electric Operations, leading major investments in grid modernization. Prior to Consumers Energy, she held positions at DTE Energy, building a strong foundation in energy sector management. Under Berry’s stewardship, Consumers Energy has achieved record-low outage durations, accelerated renewable energy integration, and earned top rankings in customer satisfaction from J.D. Power.
