J. Douglas Field, commonly known as Doug Field, is a seasoned automotive engineering leader with over three decades of experience in vehicle development and manufacturing. He began his career at Ford Motor Company in the early 1990s, where he contributed to powertrain engineering and advanced propulsion systems. Field later joined Tesla in 2013 as Vice President of Engineering, playing a pivotal role in the development and production ramp-up of the groundbreaking Model 3 sedan, which became one of the best-selling electric vehicles globally. His expertise in scaling high-volume manufacturing earned him recognition as a key architect of Tesla's engineering success. In 2016, Field transitioned to Apple Inc., leading the secretive Project Titan, Apple's ambitious autonomous vehicle initiative, where he oversaw hardware, software integration, and vehicle engineering efforts until 2021. Demonstrating his versatility across the tech-auto divide, he assembled top talent from Silicon Valley and Detroit to push boundaries in electric and self-driving technologies. Field's achievements include multiple patents in electric propulsion and manufacturing processes, as well as contributions to industry standards for EV battery systems and production efficiency. Returning to Ford in October 2023 as Chief Electric Vehicle, Digital, and Design Officer, Field now spearheads the company's transformation into an EV powerhouse. Reporting directly to CEO Jim Farley, he leads global teams responsible for Ford's EV portfolio—including the Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning, and upcoming models—while integrating advanced digital experiences like Ford's BlueCruise hands-free driving and over-the-air software updates. Under his guidance, Ford aims to accelerate profitable EV growth, blending cutting-edge design, software-defined vehicles, and scalable manufacturing to compete in the rapidly evolving mobility landscape.
