Dietmar Berger, M.D., Ph.D., serves as Chief Medical Officer at Gilead Sciences Inc., where he leads the company’s global clinical development organization across key therapeutic areas, including HIV, oncology, inflammation, and fibrosis. With more than 25 years of experience in clinical research and pharmaceutical development, Dr. Berger oversees the strategy, execution, and advancement of Gilead’s pipeline, driving innovation to deliver transformative therapies to patients worldwide. His leadership emphasizes cross-functional collaboration, regulatory excellence, and accelerated development to address unmet medical needs. Dr. Berger earned his M.D. and Ph.D. from the Medical University of Vienna in Austria, followed by residency training in internal medicine and a fellowship in hematology and oncology. He began his industry career at Novartis, where he played a pivotal role in developing therapies for hematologic malignancies. Subsequently, at Roche/Genentech, he rose to Global Head of Oncology Clinical Development, spearheading the successful approval and commercialization of multiple breakthrough oncology drugs, including Tecentriq® (atezolizumab), Polivy® (polatuzumab vedotin), and Venclexta® (venetoclax), which have transformed treatment paradigms for various cancers. Since joining Gilead in February 2022 as Executive Vice President, Therapeutic Areas, and Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Berger has strengthened the company’s oncology and virology franchises, forging strategic partnerships and advancing late-stage programs such as Trodelvy® (sacituzumab govitecan) and lenacapavir. His strategic vision continues to position Gilead at the forefront of medical innovation, leveraging his deep expertise to enhance patient outcomes globally.
