Mr. Bienaim served as Chief Executive Officer from May 2005 to November 2023 and as Chair of the board of directors from June 2015 to November 2023 of BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc., a biopharmaceutical company. From November 2002 to April 2005, Mr. Bienaim served as Chair, Chief Executive Officer and President of Genencor, a biotechnology company focused on industrial bioproducts and targeted cancer biotherapeutics. Prior to joining Genencor, Mr. Bienaim was Chair, President and Chief Executive Officer of SangStat Medical Corporation, an immunology focused biotechnology company that was later acquired by Genzyme Corporation. He became President of SangStat in 1998 and Chief Executive Officer in 1999. Prior to joining SangStat, Mr. Bienaim held various management positions from 1992 to 1998 with Rh ne Poulenc Rorer Pharmaceuticals (now known as Sanofi Aventis), including Senior Vice President of Corporate Marketing and Business Development, and Vice President and General Manager of the advanced therapeutic and oncology division. Mr. Bienaim is also a director of the Biotechnology Innovation Organization. The Board has concluded that Jean-Jacques Bienaim should serve on the Board because he has significant leadership experience in the management of biotechnology organizations, business development, and sales and marketing of both biotechnology and pharmaceutical products.
