Nick Kalayjian is a seasoned hardware engineering leader with over two decades of experience in designing innovative consumer and industrial products. He began his career at renowned design firms such as Continuum and Frog Design, where he honed his expertise in product development and mechanical engineering. Kalayjian earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Master of Science from Stanford University. His breakthrough came at Apple, where he spent 14 years from 2007 to 2021, rising to Vice President of Enclosure Engineering. There, he led multidisciplinary teams responsible for the mechanical design and manufacturing of iconic products including the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iMac, iPad enclosures, Apple Watch, AirPods, HomePod, and Apple Vision Pro, driving advancements in materials, thermal management, and high-volume production. In August 2021, Kalayjian joined Joby Aviation Inc. as its inaugural Chief Hardware Officer, playing a pivotal role in advancing the company's electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft toward commercialization. Reporting directly to the CEO, he oversaw all aspects of hardware engineering, including airframe design, propulsion systems, battery integration, and supply chain scalability. Under his leadership, Joby achieved key milestones such as FAA Type Certification progress, successful flight testing of production-intent vehicles, and partnerships for global manufacturing, positioning the company to deliver air taxi services by 2025. Kalayjian's tenure at Joby solidified his reputation as a pioneer in next-generation mobility hardware, blending aerospace rigor with consumer electronics precision. Now serving as Former Chief Hardware Officer, he continues to influence the industry through consulting and advisory roles, with a legacy of delivering reliable, high-performance hardware at scale.
