Harold Bernstein, M.D., Ph.D., serves as President, Research and Development and Chief Medical Officer at Maze Therapeutics Inc., where he leads the company’s innovative precision medicine efforts targeting kidney diseases. A board-certified pediatrician and geneticist with over 25 years of experience in biotechnology and academia, Dr. Bernstein earned his M.D. and Ph.D. from Harvard Medical School and completed residency and fellowship training at Boston Children’s Hospital. Early in his career, he was a faculty member at Harvard Medical School, where he conducted pioneering research in gene therapy and rare genetic disorders, publishing extensively and securing key patents. Prior to joining Maze Therapeutics in 2021, Dr. Bernstein held senior leadership roles at leading biopharmaceutical companies. At BioMarin Pharmaceutical, he was Executive Vice President and Head of Research and Technical Operations, overseeing a robust pipeline of therapies for rare diseases, including the successful development and approval of vosoritide for achondroplasia. Previously, as Senior Vice President of Research and Development at Catabasis Pharmaceuticals and in various capacities at Genzyme Corporation (now Sanofi), he advanced gene therapy programs and neuromuscular disease treatments from discovery through clinical stages, contributing to multiple investigational new drug applications and Phase 3 trials. At Maze Therapeutics, Dr. Bernstein directs the end-to-end R&D strategy, leveraging the company’s proprietary mapping and analysis platform to advance precision therapies for underserved kidney conditions, such as APOL1-mediated nephropathy. His strategic vision has accelerated the progression of Maze’s lead candidates into clinical development, positioning the company as a leader in kidney precision medicine.
