David Soergel, M.D., serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at Madrigal Pharmaceuticals Inc., a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on developing novel therapeutics for metabolic and liver diseases, including non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH, now known as MASH). In this role, Dr. Soergel leads the company’s clinical development strategy, overseeing the advancement of resmetirom (Rezdiffra), Madrigal’s lead product, which received FDA approval in March 2024 as the first therapy for adults with noncirrhotic MASH with moderate to advanced liver fibrosis. His leadership has been pivotal in guiding Madrigal through successful Phase 3 trials, regulatory submissions, and commercialization efforts, positioning the company at the forefront of liver disease innovation. A board-certified cardiologist with over 25 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, Dr. Soergel earned his M.D. from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed his internal medicine residency at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center and a cardiology fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. Prior to Madrigal, he held senior roles at Ironwood Pharmaceuticals as Senior Vice President and Head of Research & Development, where he spearheaded the clinical development and FDA approval of linaclotide (Linzess®), a first-in-class therapy for irritable bowel syndrome with constipation and chronic idiopathic constipation. Earlier in his career, Dr. Soergel spent 16 years at Pfizer Inc. in progressive clinical development positions, contributing to multiple cardiovascular programs, including the development of drugs for heart failure and acute coronary syndrome. His extensive track record includes authoring numerous peer-reviewed publications, presenting at major medical conferences, and fostering collaborations that have accelerated novel therapies from discovery to market.
