Clete Willems serves as Chief Global Affairs Officer at Netflix Inc., where he leads the company's global public policy, government affairs, and content strategy efforts. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame and Georgetown University Law Center, he began his career clerking for Judge Douglas H. Ginsburg on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and later practiced law at Sidley Austin LLP, specializing in international trade and regulatory matters. During the Trump administration, Willems held senior roles at the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, including Deputy Assistant to the President for International Economics and Deputy U.S. Trade Representative. He played a pivotal role in negotiating landmark trade agreements such as the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), the U.S.-Japan Trade Agreement, and Phase One of the U.S.-China trade deal. His contributions earned him recognition as a key architect of America's modern trade policy, navigating complex geopolitical challenges to advance U.S. economic interests. Joining Netflix in 2021 initially as Chief of Staff to co-CEO Ted Sarandos, Willems was promoted to his current role in 2023. At Netflix, he oversees advocacy on issues like digital trade, content regulation, and intellectual property across more than 190 countries. His strategic leadership has helped Netflix expand its global footprint amid evolving regulatory landscapes, fostering partnerships with governments and stakeholders to promote creative freedom and innovation in the streaming industry.
