Joshua Buettner-Garrett serves as Chief Technology Officer at Solid Power, Inc., a pioneering company in solid-state battery technology for electric vehicles. Holding a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder, Buettner-Garrett has built a distinguished career in advanced materials and energy storage. Before joining Solid Power in 2019, he spent over 13 years at IBM Research-Almaden, where he led multidisciplinary teams developing next-generation battery technologies, including solid electrolytes and high-energy-density cells. His early work focused on overcoming key challenges in lithium-metal anodes and solid-state ionics, earning him recognition through numerous patents and peer-reviewed publications. At Solid Power, Buettner-Garrett has driven transformative advancements in the company's sulfide-based solid electrolyte platform, scaling production from lab prototypes to pilot lines capable of delivering kilowatts of material annually. Under his leadership, Solid Power achieved critical milestones, such as shipping A-sample cells to strategic partners BMW and Ford, and forming joint ventures to accelerate commercialization. His expertise has been pivotal in securing over $130 million in funding and positioning the company as a leader in all-solid-state batteries, which offer superior energy density, safety, and fast-charging capabilities. As CTO, Buettner-Garrett oversees the full technology roadmap, from R&D innovation to manufacturing scale-up, fostering collaborations with automotive OEMs and material suppliers. His strategic vision continues to propel Solid Power toward gigawatt-hour production, addressing the automotive industry's demand for next-generation EV batteries that enable longer range and reduced costs.
