Patrick Conway, M.D., J.D., M.B.A., serves as Chief Executive Officer of Optum, a leading health services and innovation company and subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group Incorporated. A board-certified pediatrician, Conway began his career at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, where he practiced clinically, led quality improvement efforts, and developed expertise in population health management. He later advanced to Medicaid Director and Chief Medical Officer for the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, overseeing care for 1.5 million beneficiaries and pioneering value-based care models that improved outcomes and reduced costs. In 2011, Conway joined the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) as Deputy Administrator for Innovation and Quality and Acting Principal Deputy Administrator, where he spearheaded accountable care organizations, advanced payment reforms, and launched the Partnership for Patients initiative to prevent hospital-acquired conditions nationwide. Returning to UnitedHealth Group in 2013, he held key roles including President of Care and Clinical Innovation and Executive Vice President and CEO of UnitedHealthcare Government Programs, driving clinical transformation and serving millions through Medicare and Medicaid. Since assuming the CEO role at Optum in 2021, Conway has accelerated the company's use of data, technology, and services to enhance healthcare affordability, accessibility, and equity for over 200 million lives. His leadership has fueled Optum's growth in pharmacy care services, health systems consulting, and digital health solutions, earning recognition for advancing population health and value-based care on a global scale.
