Carmen Bozic, MD, is Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated, where she leads the company's global clinical development, regulatory affairs, pharmacovigilance, biostatistics, and clinical operations teams. With over two decades of experience in the biopharmaceutical industry, Dr. Bozic has been instrumental in advancing innovative therapies from early-stage research to regulatory approval. She joined Vertex in 2018 as Senior Vice President and Therapeutic Area Head for Pain, rapidly ascending to her current role, overseeing a robust pipeline that includes groundbreaking treatments for cystic fibrosis, acute and neuropathic pain, APOL1-mediated kidney disease, and type 1 diabetes via stem cell-derived therapies. Prior to Vertex, Dr. Bozic spent 15 years at Genentech (a member of the Roche Group), where she held progressive leadership roles in clinical development and medical affairs within immunology, rheumatology, and nephrology. Notably, she served as Global Development Leader for Actemra (tocilizumab), guiding its development and securing FDA approvals for rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, and cytokine release syndrome associated with CAR-T therapies. Her tenure also contributed to approvals for other key drugs like Rituxan (rituximab) and Benlysta (belimumab), establishing her as a pioneer in autoimmune and inflammatory disease treatments. A board-certified rheumatologist, Dr. Bozic earned her MD from Harvard Medical School and completed her residency in internal medicine and fellowship in rheumatology at the University of California, San Francisco. Her achievements have earned her recognition as a Fellow of the American College of Rheumatology and inclusion in the Top 25 Women Leaders in Biotech by FierceBiotech.
