Birgit Schultes, Ph.D., serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer at Intellia Therapeutics Inc., a clinical-stage biotechnology company pioneering CRISPR/Cas9-based gene editing therapies. With more than 25 years of experience in drug discovery and development, Dr. Schultes earned her Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Vienna and completed postdoctoral research at Harvard Medical School. Her early career spanned roles at Monsanto, Pharmacia, and Pfizer, where she specialized in medicinal chemistry, small molecule design, and advancing compounds into clinical stages. Before joining Intellia in 2019, Dr. Schultes was Vice President of Chemistry at Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, playing a pivotal role in the discovery and development of Onpattro® (patisiran), the first FDA-approved RNAi therapeutic for hereditary transthyretin-mediated amyloidosis in 2018. Her leadership at Alnylam also contributed to multiple investigational new drug applications and ongoing clinical programs, demonstrating her expertise in translating cutting-edge nucleic acid technologies into viable treatments. At Intellia, Dr. Schultes oversees the scientific strategy, research, and development pipeline, including lead programs for transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTR), hereditary angioedema (HAE), and alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD). Under her guidance, the company has achieved key milestones, such as the first-ever in vivo CRISPR/Cas9 clinical results and multiple Phase 3 trials, solidifying Intellia's position as a leader in precision gene editing.
